Breathing Problems and SSD

Breathing problems can cause enough distress and inability for Doctor_Fibromyalgiaan individual to work that they are able to get Social Security Disability benefits in some cases. Depending on the severity of the breathing problem will determine if Social Security Disability benefits is a possibility. Having a doctor with documentation of medical records is important and a SSD attorney or experienced SSD paralegal.

COPD

COPD stands for “chronic obstructive pulmonary disease” is a broad diagnosis that includes but not limited to: emphysema, bronchitis, lung diseases and asthma in extreme cases. It is challenging for individuals with COPD to work a full-time job especially if it is a strenuous position. The inability for an individual to have adequate breathing can lead to other conditions.

Main Causes of COPD:

  • COPD is primarily caused by smoking tobacco cigarettes. It is possible to get COPD from years of 2nd hand smoke. The greater the exposure to inhaling tobacco smoke the great the chance of COPD. Smokers with asthma have an even greater chance of getting COPD.
  • Workers who work around toxic fumes have an increased risk of developing COPD. Dust and chemical exposure to the lungs can increase chances of COPD for individuals.
  • Age & genetics can play a role in the causation of certain COPD cases. Individuals over the age of 40 are more prone to develop COPD.
  • COPD is diagnosed by a doctor with a spirometry, which is a test that measures the lung capacity and strength of an individual’s lungs.

Other signs and symptoms of COPD may include:

  • Trouble breathing especially during strenuous activities
  • Excessive mucus in lungs
  • Tightness in chest
  • Chronic Coughing
  • Swelling in feet or ankles (sometimes due to poor circulation)
  • Low energy levels
  • Fingertips and/or lips turn a blueish color

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a common condition of individuals with COPD. Sleep apnea makes it hard for an individual to get good deep sleep and makes it harder for individuals to work full time. There is a CPAP machine that individuals with sleep apnea use to increase oxygen during sleep. The CPAP machine can help individuals with COPD get deeper more restful sleep.

Final Thoughts

Depending on the severity of the COPD and medical records can be imperative to qualifying for Social Security Disability Benefits. COPD can be serious enough in certain situations for an individual to receive SSD benefits. It is important to have an experienced Disability lawyer or law team to help make a strong case.
